Thermotolerance in a spider mite: implications in disinfestation treatment

چکیده

Tetranychus ludeni Zacher is a European spider mite species and an important invasive pest in horticulture. We investigated the effects of hot air on its survival reproduction, providing knowledge for development disinfestation programs using heat. tested how each life stage responded to heat treatments five temperatures (45 57°C) exposure durations (three 15 hours). showed that no eggs hatched after exposed 45°C ≥ hours, 48°C 12 or 51°C three hours; adults survived 54°C ≥12 hours 57°C six tolerance other stages fell between. Higher temperature longer time also reduced developmental success fecundity. These findings suggest we may be able eradicate mites all one treatment at two 10-day interval kill first those laid by second. The eradication strategy 51–57°C more suitable treating plant residues exported/imported machinery, farm equipment containers because it have negative impact fresh postharvest products. With substantially mites’ fecundity, particularly when younger were treated, products with could still greatly reduce quarantine risk this pest.

Mating modifies female life history in a haplodiploid spider mite.

Mating usually modifies females' resource allocation pattern, often as a result of conflicts between male and female partners. Can such a switch occur even in the absence of sexual conflicts? We addressed this issue in the haplodiploid spider mite Tetranychus urticae, whose biology and population structure considerably reduce conflicts between males and females over reproductive decisions. Comp...

The Jean Gutierrez spider mite collection

The family Tetranychidae (spider mites) currently comprises 1,275 species and represents one of the most important agricultural pest families among the Acari with approximately one hundred pest species, ten of which considered major pests. The dataset presented in this document includes all the identified spider mites composing the Jean Gutierrez Collection hosted at the CBGP (Montferrier-sur-L...

How to visualize the spider mite silk?

Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) is a phytophagous mite that forms colonies of several thousand individuals. Like spiders, every individual produces abundant silk strands and is able to construct a common web for the entire colony. Despite the importance of this silk for the biology of this worldwide species, only one previous study suggested how to visualize it. To analyze the web st...

Remote sensing of spider mite damage in California peach orchards

Remote sensing techniques can decrease pest monitoring costs in orchards. To evaluate the feasibility of detecting spider mite damage in orchards, we measured visible and near infrared reflectance of 1153 leaves and 392 canopies in 11 peach orchards in California. Pairs of significant wavelengths, identified by Partial Least Squares regression, were combined into normalized difference indices. ...

Age‐dependent male mating tactics in a spider mite—A life‐history perspective

Males often fight with rival males for access to females. However, some males display nonfighting tactics such as sneaking, satellite behavior, or female mimicking. When these mating tactics comprise a conditional strategy, they are often thought to be explained by resource holding potential (RHP), that is, nonfighting tactics are displayed by less competitive males who are more likely to lose ...
